Fencing, also called Olympic fencing, is a sport in which two competitors fight using 'Rapier-style' swords, winning points by making contact with their opponent. Based on the traditional skills of swordsmanship, the modern sport arose at the end of the 19th century, with the Italian school having modified the historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school having later refined the Italian system. The three types of weapon are used in Olympic fencing: Foil which uses a light thrusting weapon; the valid target is restricted to the torso, Epee which uses a heavy thrusting weapon; the valid target is the entire body and Sabre which uses a light cutting and thrusting weapon; the valid target area includes almost everything above the waist. Fencing has been contested at every Summer Olympic Games since the birth of the modern Olympic movement at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens.Fencing was incorporated into the Asian Games in 1974.
